Comite por el Vote Latino, the Latinx Voter Outreach

Team concentrates on three culturally diverse wards on the near the southside of Milwaukee; many residents are Latinx. We have a close relationship with many of the community agencies in this region and strategize with them to determine how to do the work going forward.

Candidate Forums

This team conducts candidate forums for community organizations that want to have an impartial, nonpartisan organization leading these events. Our team has an established protocol that it expects each organization to follow in order for us to provide a fair debate on the issues presented to the candidates.

Community Outreach, Partners and Alliances, and Higher Education

This team has connections with about 45 community organizations requested, we provide voter registration and voter information to these organizations. We do voter registration at the Mill Road DMV and MATC downtown. A focus in the coming year is to expand our footprint into more colleges and Universities.

Community & Nonprofit Organization Training

This team provides training on Online Voter Registration. The training includes how to navigate MyVote.wi.gov and the requirements for registering to vote in Wisconsin. In addition, we offer training on what is required for proof of residence when voting at the polls. We will offer in-person or Zoom training to organizations as requested to groups of 10 or more.

High School Voter Education and Registration

This team focuses on high school voter education and registration efforts with particular attention to the MPS core schools. The MPS school board passed a resolution in 2023 to increase registration and voting for eligible high school seniors. The total number of seniors per year is about 3,000.  We are working hand in hand with the administration to accomplish this goal. Our methodology is to train the students who do the actual voter registration event. We offer the students printed and promotional materials and in-person support for special voter registration issues.

Jail-Based Voting

This team provides voter registration to those incarcerated at the Community Integration Center and the Milwaukee County Jail. The particular challenge in this work is that the residents do not have access to their Wisconsin DL or ID. We have broadened the work to the probation and parole offices in Milwaukee.

New Citizens/New Voters

This team has enjoyed a relationship with the personnel at the Federal Courthouse for over 50 years. In 2024, the team began conducting voter registration events at the USCIS office. After new citizens take the oath of citizenship, they are encouraged to stop at the League’s table and register to vote.

Milwaukee Public Library Outreach
This team has volunteers reaching out, in person, to the main and branch libraries/librarians in Milwaukee County. We are providing voter information to the librarians, and our goal is to schedule voter registration events at each of these libraries at least once a year.

Vote411

This team reaches out to candidates, and requests answers to nonpartisan questions, which are then published on the League’s Vote411.org website. The team does tremendous work to establish a volunteer corp, which then establishes a relationship with the Municipal Clerk in each community. These relationships allow us to get final candidate lists in a timely fashion.
