From: League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County

Happy Thursday,

Here's this week's Update for League of Women Voters Milwaukee County (LWVMC) news, information and events.

Join the Coffee for our Cause Sales Force

LWVMC’s fourth annual coffee sale will begin in early September. The fundraising sale will end in early November, and the coffee will be delivered in late November in time for the holidays.

Join the Sales Force Team to help LWVMC raise some much-needed revenue. Each sales force team member is asked to sell at least 10 pounds of coffee in their personal network of family, friends, and associates. Email Mary Sussman at m.sussman@lwvmilwaukee.org to sign up.

The League has lots of important information for citizens about voting and elections. Please share widely! You can simply forward the weekly Updates or direct your friends to the resources on our website, or to myvote.wi.gov and VOTE411.org so they are prepared to be informed voters for the August 9 Primary Election and the November 8 General Election. The answer to many of our nation’s problems? Boost voter turnout!

Fund Development and a Fun Night!

Do you want to have a fun evening while doing a great service for LWVMC?

We have an opportunity for a fundraising event cosponsored by the Greendale Community Theater. The Greendale Community Theater is committed to community support and thus picks nonprofits such as LWVMC to support at each of its performances. To date they have raised nearly $60,000 for various community organizations.

This year they are performing Mary Poppins which has a musical number about women’s suffrage. The Greendale Theater thought linking the LWVMC and supporting us at its performance was a good match.

So we need volunteers to be at each of the evening performances on July 28, 29 and the matinee on July 30 and the evening performances on August 4, 5 and the matinee on August 6. We will have a table at each performance and will answer questions and have materials for distribution but as it is in the moratorium period we will not be registering people to vote. We will have a vessel for donations at our information table. The theater is at the Greendale High School and has 800 seats.

We are asking for 2 volunteers for each performance, each volunteer will receive 2 tickets so that you can bring someone with you to enjoy the performance.

July is Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride Month is celebrating its 32nd year after the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed on July 26, 1990. The ADA prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. Disability Pride Month is a time to recognize and celebrate how disability is a natural part of human diversity in which people living with disabilities can take pride.

Ann Magill, a disabled woman, created the disability flag. Each of its elements symbolizes a different part of the disability community.

The Black Field represents the disabled people who have lost their lives due not only to their illness, but also to negligence, suicide and eugenics. Each color on the flag represents a different aspect of disability or impairment. Each of its elements symbolizes a different part of the disability community.

  • Red: physical disabilities
  • Yellow: cognitive and intellectual disabilities
  • White: invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
  • Blue: mental illness
  • Green: sensory perception disabilities
