Subject: LWVMC: Weekly Update for Nov. 3
From: League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County

Happy Thursday,

Here's this week's Weekly Update for League of Women Voters Milwaukee County (LWVMC) news, information and events.

Looking for a meaningful way to encourage even more people to vote on Nov 8? Have a few hours to spare on Election Day?

Then our vote tripling program might be just what you're looking for. It's a low lift, but high impact volunteer opportunity to inspire voters to encourage their friends and family to make their voices heard too.

Join LWVWI and Souls To The Polls Wisconsin in celebrating our Democracy by thanking voters and encouraging them to contact three friends after they've voted.  We're looking for volunteers to take shifts outside of designated voting locations on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Here's what you'll do:
  1. Attend a one-hour "vote tripling" training online via a Zoom meeting link. This training will give you tips about how to remind voters to text or call friends.
  2. Sign up below for one (or more!) three-hour shifts in your preferred county.
  3. You'll receive your designated polling place assignment via email or a phone call prior to Nov. 8
  4. During your shift, you'll show up to your assigned polling place and ask folks exiting the polls to text three of their friends/family a reminder to vote.
  5. You'll stay outdoors near the exits of the polls and speak to people only after they've voted.
Can you help inspire more voters to vote?
This volunteer opportunity is for you if you're outgoing and would enjoy talking to voters outside of the polls. Please respond to this form by midnight on Saturday, Nov 5

There is also information on the two referenda for Milwaukee County and two referenda for Waukesha County.

The voter guide includes information on candidates running for federal, state and local offices and on the meaning of yes and no votes for each of the referenda on the ballot for the Nov. 8 general election. If you haven’t voted yet, use the Voter Guide on Vote411.org to inform your decisions.

Volunteers Needed to Observe Canvass

The LWV is helping All Voting is Local to recruit volunteers to be observers as the Milwaukee County Board of Canvassers reviews and certifies election results. The process begins Nov. 10 and is expected to run through Nov. 18 (week days only). A more detailed description of this process may be found here.

In the past, this process has largely proceeded without incident. However, beginning in 2020, multiple states have seen concerted partisan efforts to pressure and influence boards of canvassers. Observers will be given a form to record your observations, as well as a way to immediately contact All Voting is Local to report concerns. You do not have to live in Milwaukee County to do this. The canvass will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in room G-7 at the Milwaukee County Courthouse. Training is provided.

Public Issues Forum Nov. 16 on Climate Change: Origins, Impacts and Solutions

Join League members and the public at this event to move forward in supporting the City-County Climate and Economic Equity Plan.

Wednesday, Nov. 16
6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Summit Place
Main Floor, Large Conference Room
6737 W Washington St., West Allis

With David H. Petering, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Emeritus, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Climate change presents an existential threat to the future of life on Earth. This presentation will discuss the origins of climate change within the context of Earth as a life-sustaining planet, followed by an overview of what is happening across the globe as a result of rising global temperatures. The focus will then shift to what can be done in terms of technical solutions that quickly transform the world’s economies to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Milwaukee’s Climate and Equity Plan will be highlighted to illustrate the promise and the challenges of this far-reaching objective. Next, the question will be considered whether technological fixes can be implemented in time and at the scale necessary in the USA without a drastic change in our collective values. The talk concludes with some thoughts about the role of the LWV in addressing the climate crisis.

This free, in-person event is brought to you by the LWVMC Natural Resources Committee. View flyer here.
