Subject: LWVMC: Weekly Update for August 3
From: League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County

Happy Thursday! Here's this week's Update for League of Women Voters Milwaukee County (LWVMC) news, information and events.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO SELL COFFEE FOR THE 5TH ANNUAL COFFEE SALE

The Coffee for Our Cause Sale is LWVMC's biggest fundraiser.  Last year, we sold more than 700 pounds of coffee and brought in about $6000 net to support the work of the League.  We ask that you sell 10 bags  of League-branded Colectivo coffee in your personal networks.  Some volunteers just buy coffee for themselves and as gifts for family and friends.  Others actively sell to friends, family, neighbors, or associates. The coffee sale begins on September 1 and will end around October 27.

Your coffee order will be ready in the last week of November or first week of December, which allows ample time for the sales team members to deliver the coffee to their customers before the holidays. We offer four different kinds of coffee, which can be ordered as whole bean or ground, as well as cocoa.  We also sell a League-themed "Lady Liberty" coffee mug.

Women's Equality Day and LWVMC Potluck Brunch Kickoff! August 26, 2023

Register Here!
Join the fun at the annual LWVMC Kickoff on Women's Equality Day. The event is traditionally the first all-member event of the new League year (July 1 - June 30) and is a great chance to meet new members and connect with friends.

Tuesday September 19

The LWV Milwaukee County will have a number of voter registration events planned for the National Voter Registration Day.  We will be partnering NōStudios and #iVoted to target the younger voter with a concert to be held at Nō Studios location, 1037 W McKinley. #iVoted is engaging musical talent for this concert and will be focused on attracting younger voters to the event. “Admission” will be providing proof that they are registered to vote, and if not registered, the League will be there to offer them assistance in registering. If they do not want to register they will still be admitted. The League will also provide information to the attendees about upcoming elections and other voting information.

The LWVMC Comité por el voto Latino/Latinx Voter Outreach Team participated in the August 1 National Night Out event at Kosciuszko Park. Team members Maria Torres, Maria Avila, Francheska Cortes and Esperanza Gutierrez volunteered to staff a table at the annual community event. They met with over 75 individuals to inform them of the upcoming 2024 elections and also established and reestablished connections to a number of community organizations, Parks Administration and the Milwaukee Police Department. Team leader Eloisa Gomésaid, "Because our volunteers had bilingual abilities, we were able to better connect with many of the people and each of them knew community members and community organization representatives. I believe this helps us build trust in the community and for people to see the league as a resource to them."

MPS Student Voter Registration Day

The Milwaukee Board of School Directors designates the fourth Tuesday in the month of September as Student Voter Registration Day which shall be recognized within Milwaukee Public Schools.

The Civic Engagement program will involve students in each grade level and will include phys ed and art students. Creations can be shown in the showcases in each building. A civic engagement theme will be part of the curriculum for all grades.  For the Student Voter Registration Day, art classes will create art to celebrate that day.  The curriculum for this month will focus on voting and registration in all classes.

The following schools will be targeted for voter registration events: Audubon, Bradley Tech, Riverside, MKE School of Languages, and Vincent. Each of these schools will be having voter registration events on September 26.

Good news for Wisconsin!  And there is still work to do...

Congratulations to you if your volunteer work with LWVMC impacted the 2022 record voter turnout among Wisconsin voters aged 18-24!

What about those aged 25 and older?  There are several reasons why eligible voters don’t vote and one often cited is not having information about the candidates.  VOTE411.org fills that gap.  In the Spring 2023 elections, over 9,000 people in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties used VOTE411.org.

We need all our members to use VOTE411.org and to promote VOTE411.org as a source of nonpartisan candidate information. That will have an impact on the numbers using VOTE411.org.  Will you commit to telling your family, neighbors, friends, and colleagues about the nonpartisan candidate information found in VOTE411.org?  It will make a difference!

The VOTE411 team needs tech savvy folks and a Volunteer Coordinator for Waukesha.  See the Volunteer page of the website for more information on these two volunteer positions in the Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities section.

Learn More About the Mke Climate & Equity Plan

The Milwaukee Climate and Equity Plan is the result of over three years' worth of planning and public input through the City-County Task Force on Climate and Economic Equity.

The Climate and Equity Plan supports two major goals:

Reduce community greenhouse gas emissions 45% by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050

- Improve racial and economic equity by creating green jobs that pay at least $40,000 and are focused on recruiting local people of color.

Many League Social Policy and Natural Resources advocacy positions support the goals of the City’s Climate and Equity Plan and its 10 Big Ideas. If you'd like to learn more about the plan, visit the city's website: https://city.milwaukee.gov/climate/Climate-Plan.

New exhibit explores human immigration and xenophobia through the lens of invasive species

In a newly commissioned multimedia installation, artist Sunny Leerasanthanah uses invasive species as a lens to look at human immigration and xenophobia in the United States.

In one video, three actors role-play as American National Park Service rangers and respond to prompts about invasive species, while deconstructing xenophobic ideas and language, and using satire as a guiding tool to explore lived experiences and belonging.

In a second video, a collection of audio recordings taken in nature accompanies multicolored lights that are cast upon macro views of the environment, such as a single blade of grass or waves crashing on a beach. These intense close frames, bathed in vivid hues, create alien-like forms and horror film innuendos, suggesting ulterior motives of entities that might overtake an environment in its entirety.

Leerasanthanah’s reflection on the similarity in language and discourse used regarding both invasive species and xenophobia speaks to her own experience in survival and assimilation in the United States as a queer immigrant of color.
