Volunteer to Sell Coffee for the 5th Annual Coffee Sale

The Coffee for Our Cause Sale is LWVMC's biggest fundraiser. Last year, we sold more than 700 pounds of coffee and brought in about $6000 net to support the work of the League.

We ask that you sell 10 bags of League-branded Colectivo coffee in your personal networks. Some volunteers just buy coffee for themselves and as gifts for family and friends. Others actively sell to friends, family, neighbors, or associates.

The coffee sale begins on September 1 and will end around October 27. Your coffee order will be ready in the last week of November or first week of December, which allows ample time for the sales team members to deliver the coffee to their customers before the holidays.

We offer four different kinds of coffee, which can be ordered as whole bean or ground, as well as cocoa. We also sell a League-themed Lady Liberty coffee mug.

Absentee Ballot Envelopes Redesigned

New absentee ballot envelopes approved by the Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) will provide voters with a more user-friendly way to vote absentee. The EL-122 certificate envelope features several improvements to ensure statutory and voter compliance and to improve USPS processing.

“While the new envelope designs don’t involve drastic changes, we think the new design will make it easier for absentee voters and their witness to follow the instructions and complete the process accurately and fully,” said WEC Administrator Meagan Wolfe.

The new envelope designs can be found at the following link under item 5 (Approved Designs): https://elections.wi.gov/memo/absentee-envelope-designs-approved-commission.

LWVWI Book Club: Art of Activism

LWVWI is bringing back its book club and the next read will be the "Art of Activism" by Steve Duncombe and Steve Lambert. The group will meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. starting on September 6 running through October 11. Virtual sessions will include discussion of the assigned chapters and exercises from the accompanying workbook.

You can register and learn more about the book club here. Registration is capped at 25 people, so be sure to grab your spot!

For questions, contact Molly Carmichael at m.carmichael@lwvwi.org.

We have finalized our plans with the Milwaukee Public Library (MPL), in collaboration with the City of Milwaukee Election Commission and VoteRiders regarding NVRD on September 19.

We will again have a Mini Carnival and Mock Election:
  • City of Milwaukee Election Commission will provide voting machines for mock election
  • LWVMC will provide information, voter assistance, and voter registration
  • MPL will have voting trivia questions and swag to give away
  • MPL will provide refreshments for attendees, including mocktails and cookies
We will be at two MPL locations: Mitchell Street and Good Hope Branch Libraries. The event will be from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. If you want to volunteer for these events please go to our website here.

Join Us On August 25

The August 25 League Cafe Book Club will meet at 10 a.m. in the Community Room of the East Branch of the Milwaukee Public Library: 2320 N. Cramer St. Milwaukee, WI 53211.

Because we had such a good discussion in July and we still had a lot more to talk about, we decided to continue the discussion of our July book club selection, “400 Souls: A Community History of African America, 1619-2019”, edited by Ibram X. Kendi and Keisha N. Blain.

Whether you attended in July or not, feel free to pick just a single story or a single part or a few parts or a poem or two to read in the book. At our August meeting, we will take turns talking about what we read in particular and then open it up for discussion.

Whether or not you will have read the book, please do not hesitate to come to listen and join the discussion!

Pathways to Housing Equity

On September 6, the public is invited to a presentation by the Community Development Alliance and its partners on a plan for the future of quality, affordable homeownership in Milwaukee. The event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Gather at the Deer District, is promoted as “a day of inspiring work as we advance racial equity by providing a pathway to homeownership for Black and Brown Milwaukeeans!”

Register here for this free event. Parking information will be shared closer to the event date.

County Budget Listening Sessions

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley is inviting the public to a series of four budget town halls to learn more about Milwaukee County's vision and mission, get connected to key county resources, and share ideas on the upcoming budget.
