save act 2025

Peggy Creer | Published on 4/11/2025

The U.S. House of Representatives has PASSED House Resolution (HR) 22, the most significant voter-suppression bill ever passed by Congress. The ironically named Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act would require every eligible voter to provide –  IN PERSON – documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote or to update their registration.

Valid proof of citizenship is one of these 3 documents:

🔴 Certified Birth Certificate

🔴 U.S. Passport

🔴 Certificate of Naturalization  (foreign-born citizens)

The vote goes to the U.S. Senate next. There's no time to wait.

Protect Your Right to Vote — Oppose the SAVE Act!

The SAVE Act may sound harmless, but it’s a sweeping voter suppression bill.  Requiring strict proof of citizenship could block millions of eligible voters from their ballot. The SAVE Act also bans online and mail-in voter registration, which would be especially burdensome for the disability community.

The SAVE Act isn’t about safeguarding elections. It is already illegal for noncitizens to register and vote in federal or state elections, and multiple studies have shown non-citizen voting to be an extremely rare crime. The SAVE Act is an attempt by the federal government to usurp authority over elections at all levels.

Who would the SAVE Act affect?

Every eligible voter could be unnecessarily burdened by the SAVE Act when they update their voter registration. Certain communities would be disproportionately affected, including:

  • Military Members: They would not be able to use their military ID alone to prove citizenship and would need additional documentation to show their birthplace or naturalization status.

  • Natural Disaster Suvivors: The SAVE Act would require them to jump through hoops to replace documents lost due to natural disasters.

  • Married Women and Anyone with a Changed Name: Married women and other Americans who have changed their name would need to secure updated documentation to register to vote. There are an estimated 69 million American women who lack a birth certificate that reflects their current name.

  • Rural voters, Older Americans, and people who don’t travel abroad: These voters are less likely to hold a passport or readily available birth certificate.

  • Tribal Citizens: Tribal voters would be unable to register using their Tribal ID alone, as most Tribal IDs do not list a place of birth.

We will not stay silent while the SAVE Act threatens our rights as citizens to vote — the very foundation of our democracy.
