LWVWI Response to WI Legislature’s Redistricting Bill

In response to the redistricting bill introduced by state legislators, the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin (LWVWI) Executive Director Debra Cronmiller issued a statement calling for more staunchly nonpartisan solutions to the state’s gerrymandered maps. “While we are happy to see legislators look into a potential solution for the current partisan map-drawing process, this bill does not meet the needs of Wisconsinites and does not have enough nonpartisan safeguards in place.”

LWVWI advocates for more public input and transparency, and for stronger measures to assure an independent, nonpartisan entity draws the final maps.

Are you interested in meeting with others who have a disability or who care for someone with a disability?  Do you have concerns that affect the disabled community such as housing, financial rights and protections, voting rights, protective care, education, health care, and others?

Join us to put a voice to your concerns, provide mutual support, and discuss potential advocacy.

Let’s Thank Meagan Wolfe!

Wisconsin Elections Commission Administrator Meagan Wolfe has been disparaged by election deniers for years, despite the fact that the state’s elections have been well run, accurate and secure. Citing voter distrust of elections administration, the state senate fired Wolfe in a party-line vote on September 14th. The 2020 election results were confirmed by state audits, recounts and multiple lawsuits. The state League is inviting its members to send notes of appreciation and support to Wolfe.

We Are Called to Defend Democracy

What is democracy? Merriam-Webster defines it as government by the people. Is it more accurate to say government by the people who vote?

And then, two questions come to mind:

  1. Do all citizens have the right to vote?
  2. Do all citizens vote who are eligible to vote?
As the League of Women Voters, we address the first question with our advocacy for voting rights. To address the second question, we need to know why people don’t vote. Reasons from an National Public Radio survey after the 2020 general election include not being registered, feeling their vote wouldn’t have made a difference and being undecided on whom to vote for.

We educate voters about the candidates with VOTE411.org. Can you help spread the word about VOTE411.org?

It is so underutilized! Watch these weekly Updates for ideas about how you can help.

Next Meeting: Friday, September 22 at 10:00 a.m.

Location: Community Room of the the East Branch of the Milwaukee Public Library East, 2320 N. Cramer St.

Our September meeting will be a general discussion meeting. We will also decide together on our October book selection.

Please, come one, come all!
