Engaging Teachers to Conduct Student-led Voter Registration Events

A few weeks ago, Beth Sondel, the Wisconsin Coordinator for The Civics Center, asked Leigh Ann Tidey to help with a statewide effort to engage teachers to conduct student-led voter registration events. Leigh Ann shared the Student Voter Advocate brochure and other LWVMC materials that Leigh Ann has developed during her tenure as Team Leader for the High School Voter Services Team.

Beth was invited by the WI Department of Public Instruction to provide a virtual workshop on high school voter registration. This training is scheduled for November 13 and will be for the WI Civic Fellows, who are 15 practicing Social Studies teachers from across the state, one from each CESA and then an additional teacher from Madison, Milwaukee, and Green Bay. Beth has asked Leigh Ann to co-present at this workshop. While this is a lot of work for Leigh Ann, she has agreed to do this because it is a great opportunity to increase youth involvement around the state! Thank you Leigh Ann Tidey!

UW-Madison Collaboration for Reaching High School Students

Leigh Ann Tidey gave a presentation to the University of Wisconsin-Madison business school students about high school student registration and voting on September 12. She described how we currently try to get students to register and vote.

The entire curriculum for the semester will be for the students to create marketing plans that they think will be successful in reaching and motivating high school students. As their lectures progress, their marketing plans will develop. They will be provided a release form and if they consent, we can have the materials to use as we wish. There are 6-8 groups in each class. The project will be completed at the end of the semester.

Reaching youth through social media is vital to encouraging them to register and vote.

Thank you to our volunteers who helped on National Voter Registration Day!

National Car-Free Week: October 2-8

Milwaukee's Climate and Equity Plan promotes transportation infrastructure that will enhance our quality of life while slashing greenhouse gas emissions. Thirty-one percent of Wisconsinites are non-drivers. This includes people with disabilities, young people, seniors, and people who can’t afford cars or gas. The Washington Disability Mobility Initiative and  America Walks challenge drivers to go car-free for a week and to support investment in public transportation.

Guided by principles of cultural inclusivity, the 2023 Cultures & Communities Festival, October 5 - 12, will present films, speakers, and public forums designed to amplify diverse cultural expressions and celebrate community, convening multicultural, intergenerational audiences across southeastern Wisconsin. The Festival offers a wide range of artistic and cultural experiences that promote collective expressions of joy. More information here.

October 19

4 p.m.
4th Floor Conference Center
Golda Meir Library
2311 E. Hartford Ave., Milwaukee, WI
In-person and virtual. Register here.

Ermitte Saint Jacques, Assistant Professor, UWM Department of African and African Diaspora Studies and Robert Smith, Harry G. John Professor, Marquette University Department of History will discuss middle-class African American experience in Milwaukee.  This collaborative project challenges and complicates existing narratives about Black Milwaukee that are mired in narrow assertions primarily focused on poverty, residential segregation, criminalization, and educational achievement gaps.
