2024 Elections are around the corner!!

Can you be a Community Volunteer?

The Spring Voter Guide will cover races in 59 municipalities and school districts in Milwaukee and Waukesha County.  We need a community volunteer for each municipality and school district to:

  1. Contact the city, village, town, or school district clerk in November and confirm with him/her their willingness to help us and which offices are up for election in Spring 2024;  then report this information to the  Vote411 Voter Guide Team.

  2. Share with us any key issues in the municipality or school district that could help the VOTE411 team create questions important to the constituents.

  3. In early January, the day after the candidate filing deadline, get the candidate names and contact information from the clerk, and pass that information on to us.  The timing here is critical so the Vote411 team can quickly invite the candidates to participate in the online Spring Voter Guide by answering the questions we have posed to the candidates and then publish their answers in Vote411.org.

Interested?  To volunteer, please contact Sarajane Kennedy (Milwaukee County) or Ellen Trytek (Waukesha County) at voterguide@lwvmilwaukee.org.

But the journey to asylum is also fraught with challenges: many women experience extreme violence in transit, have to navigate cultural differences in border towns, and are forced to make difficult decisions for the future of their children and families.

Learn more about the complex social, political, and physical obstacles these women face when seeking safety for their families and themselves from Erin M. Barbato, Director of the Immigrant Justice Clinic at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School.

Money Matters

Who gets my gifts to the League of Women of Voters?

Many of us donate to the League of Women Voters.  Do we know where our money goes?  There are three levels within the League:  national, state, and local.  Only gifts made directly to the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County come directly to our local league.  Here is a quick Q&A.

Q1.  Will my donation to the LWVUS or to the LWVWI come back to the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County because I am a member of the LWVMC?

Answer:  No, money donated to the LWVUS stays with the national League and money donated to the LWVWI stays with the state League.  Gifts must be made directly to the LWVMC for the gift to count as a local league gift.

Q2.  Is the League of Women Voters a 501(c)3 charitable tax-exempt organization?

Answer:  This gets complicated. The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin (LWVWI) and LWVMC are both 501(c)3 organizations and gifts are tax deductible.  The League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS) is a 501(c)4 organization and gifts are not tax deductible.  Your gift will support programming and advocacy for major public policy issues.  The League of Women Voters Education Fund (LWVEF) is a 501(c)3 organization and gifts are tax deductible.  Your gift will support VOTE411.org.
