National Voter Registration Day

September 17, 2024

First celebrated in 2012, National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan holiday that’s helped more than 5 million Americans register to vote! With the help of thousands of organizations and volunteers working together across the country, the holiday serves as a pre-election celebration to ensure every eligible voter is registered to vote. The League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County is a proud partner of National Voter Registration Day. We hope you will join the celebration!

Here’s how YOU can celebrate National Voter Registration Day:

  • Register to vote or check your registration online using  myvote.wi.org

  • Spread the word: Once you make sure you’re registered to vote, reach out to your friends and family to ensure they are registered to vote and/or post to social, asking your network to join you in getting #VoteReady. Be sure to use #NationalVoterRegistrationDay and #VoteReady in all of your social media posts.

  • Support one of the National Voter Registration Day events in our community. We have nine events planned for NVRD.

    • Registration events at Carroll University, two events at Mt. Mary, MATC Downtown Campus, and MATC at Walkers Square.

    • MPL libraries: Central, Good Hope, Mitchell Street and New Berlin Public Library.

Here we go again ….How hard should it be to vote?

Proposed Constitutional Amendment a Potential Burden for Voters

For the 5th time this year, the state legislature is asking voters to approve an amendment to the WI Constitution. LWVMC and other voter rights organizations oppose all of them, on the grounds that the amendments do nothing to strengthen our elections or help voters.

What is the proposed amendment?

The amendment would change the constitution to say that “Only a US citizen age 18 or older who is a resident” may vote in a national, state, or local office or statewide or local ballot measure election. Currently, the constitution states that “Every US citizen age 18 or older who is a resident of an election district” is a qualified voter.

WI already has one of the strictest voter photo ID laws in the nation. What’s next? This amendment opens the door to possibly requiring proof of citizenship to vote, even though 10% of citizens do not have access to documentation (destroyed, lost), and many others do not have easy access to birth certificates, passports or naturalization papers. States enacting similar laws are stoking anti-immigrant sentiment and bogus claims of voter fraud.

Vote No: November 5 Constitutional Amendment

The Constitutional Amendment on the November 5 ballot is harmful and can diminish our voting rights. Join the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin on Tuesday, September 17 at 7 pm for this virtual program to learn why you should vote no to this constitutional amendment. Learn what's at stake. This constitutional amendment aims to divide us.

Let's come together and vote no!

Election Observer Training Oct. 24, 6-8 pm

The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin needs your help to monitor Wisconsin's elections. They are seeking volunteers to be trained as Election Observers and placed in polling places in specific areas around the state. Training is provided, and the program is open to non-members.

Election Observation Program Goals:

  1. to be sure there is no disenfranchisement

  2. to monitor the voter experience - including registration and showing ID

  3. to monitor the absentee ballot counting process

  4. to track any problems that can be fixed for future elections

Requirements: You'll need to be available to volunteer for a minimum of 2 hours on Election Day. Election observers will also need a cell phone to use while volunteering and have their own transportation to and from their assigned polling location. There are also opportunities to be a "roving" observer and observe at multiple polling sites. Rovers need to be available to volunteer for at least 4 hours on Election Day.

Training Information: We conduct our election observer training via online webinar.

Learn more about our Election Observation Program here. If you have questions about this volunteer opportunity contact our Voter Education Manager, Eileen Newcomer, at enewcomer@lwvwi.org or (608)256-0827.

Wanted:  High School Outreach Coordinators

The High School Voter Education and Registration Team is looking to expand our group of Outreach Coodinators.  Coordinators work with school personnel to set up and run registrations in high schools.  This includes working with school personnel to set dates and times, training student helpers, providing information to volunteers, gathering materials, attending the registrations, and taking registrations to election clerks, if necessary.  We provide much support - volunteers, training slides, publicity and registration materials, checklists, and a team of coordinators ready to answer any questions.

This is an exciting election season.  School personnel have been contacting us asking for registrations and we want to provide them. Being an Outreach Coordinator is a great opportunity to get to know the hard-working dedicated staff members and the enthusiastic students - and to help usher these students into participating in the democratic process.  Please consider this opportunity - coordinating in one or several schools.  Any questions?  Contact Judy Winn at j.winn@lwvmilwaukee.org.

NEW PARTNER FOR COFFEE SALE

Our new partner for the Coffee Fundraiser is East View Coffee, founded and owned by Jenny Ulbricht.  East View is a local, woman-owned business that uses sustainable practices.  Jenny works with women-owned coffee bean producers in Columbia and Brazil, where women have traditionally supplied a majority of the labor, but are rarely the owners.  They use smart packaging and carbon-neutral shipping to ensure that our love for coffee doesn’t come at the expense of our planet.

The Board selected East View Coffee Company as our new partner for its

Great tasting coffee, and

Values aligned with ours at LWVMC.

Have you purchased your coffee yet?  Buy now!  If you like it, you can order more.  Your purchase benefits LWVMC as well as East View’s collaboration with woman-owned coffee producers.

Each 12 oz. bag of coffee is $17.50 and is available in either whole bean or ground. Descriptions of the four coffee blends are on the website.  The sale started on September 1 and runs until December 10.

VOTE411.org is an online voter guide helping registered voters be informed before going to the polls.  Introduced in 2006 by the League of Women Voters Education Fund, LWVMC has participated since 2020.   VOTE411.org provides information about candidates running for office and ballot measures on our ballot prior to each election.

Thank you for your efforts to share the value of VOTE411.org with your family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues.  This added to the work of Anita Gulotta-Connelly and the team of League members reaching out to the community about using VOTE411 as an election resource.

During the time leading up to the August primary, there were over 8500 users of VOTE411!  This is more usage for a primary election than for the Spring election in 2023!   Let’s keep this number growing to help registered voters be informed before casting their ballot.

VOTE411 is available now with information on candidates running for state office in the Fall election.  Watch for presidential candidate information in the coming weeks.  Do you have your plan to vote on Tuesday, November 5?
