THERE'S ONE MORE TUESDAY TO EAT TACOS FOR THE LEAGUE!!

The Cafe Corazon restaurant group selected LWVMC as its featured Tú y Yo (You and I) community organization for the month of November.

This means that for every taco plate ordered on each of the four Tuesdays in November, LWVMC will receive a $1.00 donation.

Cafe Corazon has great food, a fun atmosphere, and friendly staff at three locations in Bay View, Riverwest, and Brown Deer. And who doesn’t like tacos?!

This is an easy way to support our League’s activities and to get our name out more across the Milwaukee community.

We've celebrated Tú y Yo and LWVMC every Tuesday as a family. My grandsons, Henry (left) and Reid are big fans (and big eaters)!

Letter to Editor from Election Observer

Letter from Election Observer (and LWVMC member) published in the Nov. 17 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Time spent as polling site observer was positive experience

On Election Day I volunteered for the first time as a polling site observer. I felt privileged to watch poll workers who, from 6 am until nearly 10 pm, checked in voters, answered myriad questions and solved problems with knowledge, kindness, respect and professionalism.

My takeaways: The two-hour observer training I got from the nonpartisan Wisconsin League of Women Voters was comprehensive and well-presented; I learned so much about how elections are run in our communities and, importantly, the rules, checks and balances that make them safe, secure and transparent. To anyone who’s wondered about the allegations of election fraud over the past four years (remarkably absent now), you owe it to yourself, and our country, to sign up for an eye-opening League training session. It will be time well spent.

Wisconsin: the Most Purple State

An analysis of the November election by political analyst Craig Gilbert, published in the Nov. 13 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, confirmed Wisconsin as the most purple state in the U.S., stating, "Wisconsin is so chronically competitive that it only takes the smallest swings and tiniest margins to flip the state back and forth...Almost everything about this election buttressed Wisconsin’s claim to be the most persistently purple state in America."

Wisconsin was the only state where the margin of victory for the presidential race was less than one percent -- as it has been in five of the past seven presidential elections. In an election where voter turnout fell in most of the country, Wisconsin's 76% voter turnout beat all but Minnesota. This election proves that in Wisconsin -- more than anywhere else -- no one can say their vote doesn't count.

December 10, 2024, 6:30-8:00 p.m.

The state’s political maps changed in the wake of the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s decision striking down the old maps. Join the LWV Dane County for a forum to discuss the impacts of past gerrymandering, whether the new maps had any effect on the November 5 election, and what voters need to do to ensure future elections represent the will of the people including considering alternatives to the presidential Electoral College.

Registration details and more details are available on the Madison league website. It is both in person and virtual.

Our Wisconsin state league has a Fair Maps committee and you are welcome to join.

Reproductive Rights on the Line in Wisconsin

This summer the Wisconsin Supreme Court agreed to hear two cases related to abortion rights; i.e., Kaul v. Urmanski and Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin v. Urmanski.  Joel Urmanski is the District Attorney of Sheboygan County.

After the 2022 U. S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, abortions were discontinued in Wisconsin due to an 1849 law that criminalized abortion, with the only exception being the life of the mother.  In 2023, Dane County Judge Diane Schlipper ruled that this law applied to feticide and not to abortion, and abortions were restarted.  Urmanski appealed this decision.

On November 10, the court heard arguments in the case Kaul v. Urmanski.  Urmanski’s attorney argued that the 1849 statute is still enforceable as the legislature never repealed it.  Kaul’s attorney said there was an implied repeal of this law because later statutes regulating abortion, such as the 2015 law prohibiting abortions after 20 weeks, would supersede the 1849 law.

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin will present its arguments later this term.  Rulings on both of these cases will occur sometime within the court session that ends in June of 2025.
