Dams & Stormwater: 2024 Report Card for Wisconsin's Infrastructure

The management of our state’s natural waters through dams and stormwater programs is an undertaking that both protects communities and preserves those waterways. These processes provide recreational areas, wildlife habitats, hydroelectric power, agricultural water sources, and flood control. Join the LWVWI and ASCE-WI on December 12, 2024 from 12:00 to 1:30 pm for the Dams (C+) and Stormwater (C) webinar.

This is one webinar in a nine-part series looking at the state of all areas of infrastructure in Wisconsin. Learn about the whole series here.

In the United States, women are still not guaranteed equal rights. We have seen the devastating consequences of this reality. Yet, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which will update the US Constitution to protect the equality of rights under the law regardless of sex, can be added to the Constitution with one action. With just months left in office, we are urging President Biden to act to ensure that the ERA is published.

The ERA will protect against the rollback of rights, provide a vital tool for the judicial branch to decide sex discrimination cases, and pave the way for further legislative progress toward sex and gender equality.

The 2024 election results were not friendly to women’s equality, and our future status in the country is at stake. It’s imperative that President Biden take urgent action to ensure the process of publishing the Amendment is completed since it has been fully ratified since 2020.

Urge President Biden to instruct the US Archivist to certify and publish the ERA in the Constitution. Equality cannot wait. Take Action Now!

LWVWI Civic Education Seminar

LWVWI member Joan Schwarz, an attorney and former university academic, is offering a virtual Civic Education Seminar this spring. Beginning on January 23, this virtual seminar will meet every other Thursday from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., for eight sessions. Joan will lead group discussions about the Constitution, the rule of law, our democratic institutions, federalism and the tensions on our laws and norms.

The Democracy Index, which measures the state of political democracy in 167 countries, has categorized the U.S. not as a “full democracy” but as a “flawed democracy.” The seminar will focus on the weakened state of the guardrails of our three branches of our government, with special attention to the U.S Supreme Court.

Registrants must purchase a $5 textbook. There are 25 spots available. If you register past the cutoff, Joan will contact you about being added to the waitlist.

Questions? Email Joan at advocacy.jschwarz@gmail.com

The state’s political maps changed in the wake of the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s decision striking down the old maps. Join the LWV Dane County for a forum to discuss the impacts of past gerrymandering, whether the new maps had any effect on the November 5 election, and what voters need to do to ensure future elections represent the will of the people including considering alternatives to the presidential Electoral College.

Registration details and more details are available on the Madison league website. It is both in person and virtual.

Our Wisconsin state league has a Fair Maps committee and you are welcome to join.

League Advocacy on Climate Change and Economic Equity

On behalf of the League’s Natural Resource committee, Louise Petering presented a statement in support of a $100,000 appropriation to hire an "Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) Fund Development and Partnership Coordinator" at the Milwaukee County Budget Hearing October 28, 2024. We based our statement on the LWVUS climate change position1 that urges cooperation among governmental units. The IRA also promotes cooperation. Fortunately, the item was retained in the approved County Budget.  The County Supervisors and County Executive Crowley deserve thanks for this investment in a sustainable Milwaukee County.

LWVMC also submitted a statement to the City of Milwaukee’s Finance and Personnel Committee as it considered the City’s 2025 budget on October 30th. We supported retention of the Environmental Collaboration Office (ECO) in the Mayor’s office rather than moving it under the Common Council’s oversight.  Our statement rested on the LWVUS position on representative government2 emphasizing that “the Mayor’s office represents the entire population of the City and is accountable to all City constituents, unlike each of the 15 members of the Common Council who are primarily responsible to residents of their districts and secondarily to the City as a whole.” Efficient operation of the ECO is critical as the City moves to address climate change. Because the motion to move the office was defeated, the ECO remains with the Mayor’s office.
