2024 Report Card for Wisconsin's Infrastructure is Today!

Dams & Stormwater: 2024 Report Card for Wisconsin's Infrastructure

The management of our state’s natural waters through dams and stormwater programs is an undertaking that both protects communities and preserves those waterways. These processes provide recreational areas, wildlife habitats, hydroelectric power, agricultural water sources, and flood control. Join the LWVWI and ASCE-WI on December 12, 2024 from 12:00 to 1:30 pm for the Dams (C+) and Stormwater (C) webinar.

This is one webinar in a nine-part series looking at the state of all areas of infrastructure in Wisconsin. Learn about the whole series here.

LWVMC End-of-Year Appeal

Twice a year (Spring and End-of-Year) our local League appeals to its membership for donations to help sustain the important work we do in our community.  Funds are needed for voter outreach and registration events and to continue to fight for reproductive rights, to protect our environment, and to defend democracy.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 from the 2024 End-of-Year appeal.  You recently received the End-of-Year Appeal letter from Nancy Maloney, LWVMC President.  If you have misplaced the letter or don’t remember receiving it, please find an electronic version here.

You have the opportunity to donate to the day-to-day operations of the League and/or to the Endowment Fund being set up at the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.  Both are needed and the choice is yours to give to one or the other or both.

Some of the specific ways your donations are used for day-to-day operations include:

·   Technology and software (Club Express, QuickBooks) costs

·   Paper, postage, mailing and printing costs

·   Rent, utilities, salary for part-time administrative staff.

·   Posters, flyers, bookmarks, buttons, and other voter registration and GOTV materials

·   VOTE411.org

·   Tablets and hotspots for voter registration events

·   Meeting and outreach materials for Advocacy committees on reproductive rights and the environment.

Please give what you can that is aligned with your personal budget and the worth you put on the grassroots work of League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County.

You can donate by check made payable to League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County and mailed to the league office at 6737 West Washington Avenue, Suite 2218, West Allis, WI 53214.  Or you can donate by credit card at www.lwvmilwaukee.org

Safe Drinking Water Act 50th anniversary

No matter who we are or where we live, all of us want to live in communities where we can turn on the tap and know the water coming out of it is safe to drink – both for us, and the people we love. Fifty years ago, Republican President Gerald Ford signed the Safe Drinking Water Act into law, which promised to protect our drinking water.

Fast forward to today, and it is clear: Wisconsin has not used the Safe Drinking Water Act to fully protect our communities. Across the state, tens of thousands of Wisconsinites are still forced to protect themselves and their families from harmful contaminants by relying on five-gallon water jugs for everyday tasks like brushing their teeth, washing dishes, mixing baby formula, and preparing meals. PFAS, lead, and nitrate contamination are of particular concern due to their impact on our health across a wide range of Wisconsin communities.  LWVWI joined other organizations in asking Wisconsin lawmakers to use funds from the state's $4 billion surplus to invest in our drinking water infrastructure.

Gail Sklodowska and  Dr Gaebler attended the  Maternal Health Community Event  on Dec 7th.  Dr. Gaebler served on the  panel that  discussed infant and maternal mortality.  The Reproductive Rights Committee  was present to increase awareness of the WI Supreme Court election and its relationship to Reproductive Rights and encourage individuals to become informed and vote.

Special thanks to our member, Mike Klohen, who initiated this collaboration. And to members Judith Winn & Joey Walsh who donated diapers. We are now looking into additional collaborations with this wonderful organization.

Coffee for a Strong Democracy

Thanks to everyone for great work selling and promoting coffee!   The Coffee for a Strong Democracy sale ended on Tuesday.  Watch next week’s Update for results on how we did!

In the United States, women are still not guaranteed equal rights. We have seen the devastating consequences of this reality. Yet, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which will update the US Constitution to protect the equality of rights under the law regardless of sex, can be added to the Constitution with one action. With just months left in office, we are urging President Biden to act to ensure that the ERA is published.

The ERA will protect against the rollback of rights, provide a vital tool for the judicial branch to decide sex discrimination cases, and pave the way for further legislative progress toward sex and gender equality.

The 2024 election results were not friendly to women’s equality, and our future status in the country is at stake. It’s imperative that President Biden take urgent action to ensure the process of publishing the Amendment is completed since it has been fully ratified since 2020.

Urge President Biden to instruct the US Archivist to certify and publish the ERA in the Constitution. Equality cannot wait. Take Action Now!

Voter Services- Library Outreach Coordinators Needed!

Do you like libraries?  Do you want to help voters get registered and find the information they need?

The Library Outreach Committee is looking for volunteers to help coordinate LWV voter registration efforts in every one of the Milwaukee County Libraries.

These libraries still need a coordinator:

- Milwaukee- Capitol Branch

- Cudahy

- Franklin

- Greendale

- Shorewood

- South Milwaukee

- St Francis

Time commitment would be a couple of hours a month to coordinate one voter registration event and several trips to make sure each library is stocked with literature showing where to vote and how to register.  Contact Linda for more information, or to volunteer!
