LWVMC End-of-Year Appeal

Money Matters

LWVMC End-of-Year Appeal

Do you support the fight for everyone’s freedom to vote? Are you an advocate of the environment and/or reproductive rights? Of course; this is why you belong to the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County. A donation now, during the LWVMC End-of-Year Appeal, helps carry out our voter services and advocacy work to empower voters and defend democracy.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 from the 2024 End-of-Year Appeal. We have raised $3,855 through December 15 with $3,200 for the endowment and $655 for operations, so we are close to 40% of our $10,000 goal for the End-of-Year Appeal. Please give what you can that is aligned with your personal budget and the value that you place on the grassroots work of League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County.

You can donate by check made payable to League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County and mailed to the league office at 6737 West Washington Avenue, Suite 2218, West Allis, WI 53214. Or you can donate by credit card at www.lwvmilwaukee.org

There are several other ways you can make an end-of-year donation to the LWVMC. One is by giving part of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your IRA. Talk with your financial advisor about the tax benefits of making a Qualified Charitable Distribution gift from your IRA to the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County. Please have the check made out to the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County. Our EIN number is 39-6096750.

Another way to make a gift is from your Donor Advised Fund (DAF). You have already received a tax deduction for your gift, so this is as easy as deciding how much you would like to donate to the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County. Talk with your representative at the organization that holds your DAF for specifics on making this gift.

THANK YOU!!

P.S. If you’ve misplaced the End-of-Year Appeal letter from Nancy Maloney, LWVMC President, please find an electronic version here.

Leigh Ann Tidey Steps Down as Leader of the High School Voter Registration Team

Ten years ago, the League, Milwaukee Public Schools, and the Milwaukee Election Commission partnered to develop a program aimed at providing civic education and helping as many high school seniors as possible register to vote. Leigh Ann Tidey has been the leader of the League’s team from the very beginning. After a decade of service as the High School team leader, Leigh Ann has decided to step down from this position. Former Voter Services lead Michele Goldstein shared, “Leigh Ann succeeded in institutionalizing voter registration in the Milwaukee Public Schools and many other high schools through:

Patience

- Persistence

- Collaboration

- Creativity

- Integrity

- A genuine affection for young people coupled with respect for their potential and belief in their leadership abilities

- The creation of outstanding training materials, which expanded the reach and capacity of the High School program

- The effective use of social media to engage young people in the voter registration process

- Her ability to work with diverse communities and individuals.”

Thanks to Leigh Ann’s dedication, the High School team now schedules over 100 voter registration events and is on track to help register approximately 1,000 high school seniors this year. Leigh Ann will continue to be involved with the League and the team as a volunteer and as Creative Director. Did you know she designs all the buttons we give away at voter registration events? She also developed many flyers and handouts that we distribute at our events.

The League of Women Voters of WI honored Leigh Ann with the Meg McLane Award for Advocacy in 2023! We gathered to celebrate her accomplishments on December 14. Here are some pictures from that celebration. (Can you spot party host and photographer Peg Schrader masquerading as the furtive Elf on the Shelf?)

Coffee for a Strong Democracy

Congratulations to everyone who helped make the

Good Coffee for a Strong Democracy a great success!

We sold almost 850 bags of coffee, which is a huge number and very close to our stretch goal of 900 bags. On the dollar side, we exceeded our goal of $4000 for net income from the sale with the challenge match and other donations.

Thank you to the Coffee Sales Team who promoted the coffee sale to friends, family, neighbors and colleagues. And thank you for the coffee you purchased for yourselves and as gifts to others.

Thank you to our LWVMC membership for the coffee you purchased for yourselves and as gifts to others.

Thank you to our seven generous League members who donated toward the $1000 Challenge Match for coffee sales in October.

Thank you to Jenny Ulbricht and East View Coffee Company for the opportunity to partner with you.

Your coffee sale co-chairs Mary Voelker and Kathy Ulbricht could not be more pleased to have worked with all of you!

Check out the article about the coffee sale in the Winter Voter published on January 1 with details about everyone who helped make this a success.
