 | | | ANNOUNCING JUDY WINN as Leader of the High School Voter Registration Team
Judy is taking responsibility for the Leadership of the High School Team. She co-led with Leigh Ann Tidey for several months until Leigh Ann stepped down, after which she agreed to manage the responsibilities solo. She has done a terrific job.
Judy Winn has been in schools her entire professional life in education, first as a special education teacher in the Washington DC area and then as a teacher educator at UWM. While at UWM, she coordinated the UWM/MPS Special Education Internship and Pre-internship Program, a collaboration between UWM with Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) and, later, Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), to meet the shortage of special education teachers in MPS. She joined the League in 2021, wanting to take action to increase civic engagement. Judy has served on the Police Accountability and Public Safety Taskforce, the Membership Committee and Membership Engagement Team, and the Nominations Committee. She thoroughly enjoys being back in the schools and working with the students and staff to increase understanding and participation in the voting process.
If you want to join this dynamic effort and work with young people, dedicated school professionals, and enthusiastic volunteers, this team is for you. Contact j.winn@lwvmilwaukee.org. | Announcing Carole Montgomery as the Co-Leader for Community Outreach | Carole joined LWVMC just before Covid shut down most activities and started attending meetings when things opened up again. With an interest in voting rights and increasing voter participation, she volunteered to staff voter registration at MATC, high schools, and various Community Outreach (CO) events. In 2024, she assisted Donna Spars in coordinating CO and agreed to be officially named co-leader of that team in 2025. After a request from a community partner, she and Donna recruit volunteers, review site requirements, arrange for appropriate supplies and equipment to be delivered to the team members for the event, and then return to the office.
The Community Outreach team serves a variety of culturally diverse community partners. If you like to meet new and interesting people every time you volunteer, this is the team for you. Contact Voter Services. | | | 2024-2026 Impact on Issues Available

We Can Put This Over the Top!!!
Thank you for supporting the LWVMC during 2024 and most recently the end-of-year appeal. As of December 23, the campaign is at $9,700 just short of our $10,000 goal. The results include $3,050 for operations and $6,650 for the endowment.
We can put this over the top with your gift now which will still count toward the end of year campaign.
During 2024, the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County had over 300 voter services events and personally spoke to, educated, and distributed information to over 11,400 people. In Voter Services alone, volunteers provided over 3400 volunteer hours.
Your support is needed in 2025 to provide resources for our volunteers to educate citizens on their voting rights and important public policy issues. Your support will also help us provide election information and voter registration assistance and help to increase voter turnout and encourage civic engagement.
You can donate by check made payable to League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County and mailed to the league office at 6737 West Washington Avenue, Suite 2218, West Allis, WI 53214. Or you can donate by credit card at www.lwvmilwaukee.org
| Coffee for a Strong Democracy
In case you missed last week's announcement... | Congratulations to everyone who helped make the Good Coffee for a Strong Democracy a great success!
We sold almost 850 bags of coffee, which is a huge number and very close to our stretch goal of 900 bags. On the dollar side, we exceeded our goal of $4000 for net income from the sale with the challenge match and other donations.
Thank you to the Coffee Sales Team who promoted the coffee sale to friends, family, neighbors and colleagues. And thank you for the coffee you purchased for yourselves and as gifts to others.
Thank you to our LWVMC membership for the coffee you purchased for yourselves and as gifts to others.
Thank you to our seven generous League members who donated toward the $1000 Challenge Match for coffee sales in October.
Thank you to Jenny Ulbricht and East View Coffee Company for the opportunity to partner with you.
Your coffee sale co-chairs Mary Voelker and Kathy Ulbricht could not be more pleased to have worked with all of you!
Check out the article about the coffee sale in the Winter Voter published on January 1 with details about everyone who helped make this a success.
| | 2024, the Hottest in Recorded History - time to Act - Join the CAG steering committee
By Candice Owley and Louise Petering, CAG Co-Chairs
As 2024 draws to an end, threats from climate change and the devastating impacts of burning fossil fuels are greater than ever. Record-breaking heat, historic storms, fires out of control, and the anticipated weakening of federal oversight mean local advocacy on climate is critical. In 2024, the LWVMC established a Climate Action Group to lead our League’s efforts.
2024 accomplishments were:
- Presentation of two educational programs
- Successful advocacy at the City and County of Milwaukee for funding for Climate Equity work
- Participation in the newly established climate coalition, Our Future MKE (OFM) Moving Forward in 2025
Many of our LWVMC members are concerned about the impact of climate change. Join others in our League and community for this special meeting. For more information, contact c.owley@lwvmilwaukee.org.
