League Policy Positions and How You Can Use Them!

LWVUS will cover Impact on Issues with updates made at the 2024 Convention, as well as applying LWV positions to advocate for change. Please join us to learn about the content of the League's policy position document and how to use it to inform your advocacy. The workshop will cover issues such as linking positions across areas and how to apply a position that is written generally to proposed legislation that is more specific.

Gearing Up for Spring Elections

Happy New Year! While the 2025 Elections might seem a ways away, many Wisconsinites will have elections as early as February 18 and everyone will have the opportunity to vote in the Spring Election on April 1.

The voter turnout for spring elections is typically below 50% of eligible voters (and often far below that). So talk it up!

What’s on the ballot in Wisconsin this spring? Some of the races include:

  • State Supreme Court Justice

  • Court of Appeals Judges

  • Circuit Court Judges

  • Superintendent of Public Instruction

  • Other local races like city council, school board, and county board of supervisors

You can request an absentee ballot now at myvote.wi.gov

Get Out the Vote: Brand Management Project Encourages High School Students to Participate

A nonpartisan social media campaign in collaboration with Milwaukee high school students and the League of Women Voters encourages younger voters to take part in the electoral process

High school student Max walks into the room to meet with school guidance counselor, Mr. Phillips. Friendly but frazzled, Max rattles off a list of projects and life to-dos—including he’s not even sure how to vote.

“Look, I know you’ve got a ton on your plate,” says Mr. Phillips reassuringly, clearing off his desk with a single sweep of the arm as multiple items clatter to the ground. “But with the help of the League of Women Voters”—he produces a pamphlet out of nowhere—“voting registration is one less thing to worry about.”

This exchange did not occur in your local high school, but instead was a scene filmed in an empty classroom in Grainger Hall at the Wisconsin School of Business. The short video was one of many created by WSB student teams in Assistant Professor of Marketing and Jeffrey J. Diermeier Faculty Fellow Aziza Jones’ Brand Strategy and Management class in partnership with the Milwaukee County chapter of the League of Women Voters (LWVMC).

The project first started in 2022 when Leigh Ann Tidey, team leader with LWV’s High School Voter Education and Registration Project, reached out to Jones for college-level students interested in motivating high school students to vote. Tidey oversees the high school student voting outreach for LWV and works in conjunction with all the high schools in the Milwaukee public school system.

While all states in the U.S. allow citizens to vote at 18 years of age, many young people face barriers to voting, including a lack of understanding of the electoral process and how to register. LWV offers creative solutions to encourage high school students to register to vote in a manner that reflects the LWV’s nonpartisan platform.

2024, the Hottest in Recorded History - time to Act - Join the CAG steering committee on January 25

By Candice Owley and Louise Petering, CAG Co-Chairs

As 2024 draws to an end, threats from climate change and the devastating impacts of burning fossil fuels are greater than ever. Record-breaking heat, historic storms, fires out of control, and the anticipated weakening of federal oversight mean local advocacy on climate is critical. In 2024, the LWVMC established a Climate Action Group to lead our League’s efforts.

2024 accomplishments were:

  • Presentation of two educational programs

  • Successful advocacy at the City and County of Milwaukee for funding for Climate Equity work

  • Participation in the newly established climate coalition, Our Future MKE (OFM) Moving Forward in 2025

Join us on Saturday, January 25th, 2025, from 10 a.m. to noon to hear a report on the status of climate change and its impact on our communities. We will also discuss educational programs and action plans for 2025 and explore the creation of a formal steering committee to lead our efforts.
