Greater Milwaukee Foundation Funds Luncheon for the Community Partners of Comité por el voto latino/Latinx Voter Outreach Team | | The goals of Comité por el voto latino/Latinx Voter Outreach (CVL-LVO)’s January 14th gathering with our community partners were to:
- Celebrate our 2024 collaborations that led to supporting an increase in voter registrations and the extensive voter engagement activities on Milwaukee’s Southside;
- Review the 2024 November election ward results in Alder Districts 8 & 12;
- Discuss how to increase registrations and voter outreach more effectively.
With a wonderful lunch sponsored by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, we celebrated the past year of collaborations with fourteen (14) representatives from nine (9) of our community partners at MKE Urban Stables. Paulina Gutiérrez, the Milwaukee Election Commission Director, spoke to our group about Milwaukee’s overall increased voter turnout and acknowledged the contributions of the organizations that promoted voter education. Several ideas were shared for strengthening voter outreach, concerns for undocumented residents, and a commitment to continuing the partnerships with the League.
Eloisa thanked everyone present and those who could not make it. On behalf of the CVL-LVO (aka Comité) team of Diane Steigerwald, Maria Avila, Joey Walsh, Judit Schugurensky, and herself, she thanked regular Comité volunteers and the League leadership, some of whom were present.
At the conclusion of the meeting, attendees left with a beautiful rose and Baby’s Breath boutonniere, given to each by our dedicated volunteer, Esperanza Gutierrez. | | Leaders of the Comité por el voto latino/Latinx Voter Outreach Team

Click Here to Donate to Martha Watts Founder's Scholarship for Civic Engagement | Candidate Forum Volunteer Meeting January 29, 2025
As a service to voters, the League facilitates candidate forums when requested by a community organization. Forum participants are typically candidates for municipal offices such as local school boards, trustees, village presidents, or mayors. This makes February and March the busy season for the candidate forum team.
The Candidate Forum team responds to requests for candidate forums, coordinates the forum agreements between the community sponsors, candidates, and LWVMC, and then organizes the volunteers needed to conduct the forum: moderator, timer, question sorter, greeter, and coordinator. If you'd like to learn more, attend the volunteer zoom meeting at the link below. Contact Peggy Creer at p.creer@lwvmilwaukee.org with questions.

By Candice Owley and Louise Petering, CAG Co-Chairs
As 2024 draws to an end, threats from climate change and the devastating impacts of burning fossil fuels are greater than ever. Record-breaking heat, historic storms, fires out of control, and the anticipated weakening of federal oversight mean local advocacy on climate is critical. In 2024, the LWVMC established a Climate Action Group to lead our League’s efforts.
2024 accomplishments:
-
Presentation of two educational programs
-
Successful advocacy at the City and County of Milwaukee for funding for Climate Equity work
-
Participation in the newly established climate coalition, Our Future MKE (OFM) Moving Forward in 2025

You’re invited to join our League Cafe. This month we share the research of David Daley's "Antidemocratic: Inside the Far Right’s 50-Year Plot to Control American Elections." Journalist David Daley chronicled what he calls the far-right's long-running plan to control U.S. elections, including dismantling the Voting Rights Act. The author accuses Supreme Court Justice John Roberts of a slow bleed of the Voting Rights Act, the most effective civil rights law in our nation's history, and shows how he effectively froze the mechanism that made it work after it cleared the US House 390 to 33.
If you’re interested and haven’t read this book, Marie Garnhart will have handouts to share. No registration is required - just show up!
We hope you’ll enjoy reading this and learning more about elected representatives and the will of the people. | |
