Action Alert: Tell Congress to Protect Medicaid

Congress is pushing a budget that would gut Medicaid, putting life-saving care at risk for millions of Americans, including children, seniors, pregnant people with limited incomes, and people with disabilities. These cuts are dangerous and unacceptable.

Raise your voice NOW: Tell Congress to protect Medicaid and stop this attack on our health care!  Take action here.

Let’s get together on Saturday, June 28! Current Leaders and longtime members of our League will be on hand to orient newer members to the League, and all of us can take the opportunity to mingle and learn more about why each of us has joined the League.

Saturday, June 28 - 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.

Summit Place

6737 W Washington St

West Allis 53214

Meeting Room: 2135

Registration is appreciated but feel free to come in any case!

LWVMC Supported Planned Parenthood

at Pride Parade

LWV Pride Parade

LWVMC joined Planned Parenthood Generation Action to show our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. At the State Meeting, our Executive Director, Debra Cronmiller reminded us all that the League is not backing down from our DEI initiatives. In fact, we are ramping up.

The event was family friendly and a downpour of rain did not stop the enthusiastic parade participants or the cheering crowds. Thanks to the six members and their friends who showed their support of our community.

We are seeking members interested in serving on our new LGBTQ+ committee. If you are interested, contact k.vance@lwvmilwaukee.org

No Kings 2025
KEEP FIGHTING BACK!

No Kings Protest

Cathedral Square Park, 520 E. Wells, Milwaukee

Saturday, June 14, Noon - 2:00

Noon - 1:00 Protest and Speakers (standing)

1:00-2:00 1.2 mile March ending back at the Park

Come for one or both

Attendance is expected to be 7,000 people in Milwaukee. Contact Donna Spars at d.spars@lwvmilwaukee.org for more information. Meet Donna at 11:45 in front of Belmont Tavern, 784 N. Jefferson to protest together. She’ll be holding the United States flag. Wear your LWV branded apparel if you have it. We’ll be protesting/marching with the League banner.

NO KINGS is a national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies. We’ve watched as they’ve cracked down on free speech, detained people for their political views, threatened to deport American citizens, and defied the courts. The flag doesn’t belong to Donald Trump, it belongs to us. We’re not watching history happen -- we’re making it!

A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

 Another Strike Against Women’s Healthcare

The Trump administration is revoking guidance to the nation’s hospitals that directed them to provide emergency abortion healthcare for women when necessary to stabilize their serious medical conditions. That guidance was issued to hospitals in 2022, weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court upended national abortion rights in the U.S. It was an effort by the Biden administration to preserve abortion healthcare for extreme cases in which women were experiencing medical emergencies and needed an abortion to prevent organ loss or severe hemorrhaging, among other serious complications. The Biden administration had argued that hospitals — including ones in states with near-total bans — needed to provide emergency abortions under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act. That law requires emergency rooms that receive Medicare dollars to provide an exam and stabilizing treatment for all patients. Nearly all emergency rooms in the U.S. rely on Medicare funds. The Trump Administration would rather women die in emergency rooms than receive life-saving abortions,” Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, said in a statement.

A Volunteer Opportunity to Fight Back!

The League of Women Voters is challenging us to fight back by using civic engagement and collective power. You can do that by attending the protests that LWVMC will be promoting. We are also planning some types of civic action in conjunction with some of the protests. For example, at “No Kings” on June 14, we’ll ask people to sign postcards that we’ll send to Ron Johnson opposing the SAVE Act.

Can you help us with those civic actions at a table or perhaps, if you’re comfortable, by walking through the crowd with a clipboard? If so, please contact Donna Spars at d.spars@lwvmilwaukee.org. We will contact you when there’s an event and you can sign up for the ones for which you’re available. Thank you!
