Call for Applications for the Nominating Committee

With the LWVMC year nearing the end, this year’s Nominating Committee’s work will soon be finished. However, that means there are three open positions available to LWVMC members for the 2026/2027 Nominating Committee, including the Chair. The Committee is seeking applicants who are interested in having a role in determining which League leaders continue to move the League forward.  Applicants can be either self-nominated or nominated by another person with the applicant's approval.

The primary purpose of the Nominating Committee is to recruit candidates for open officer and board positions. Nominating Committee members communicate with all members, review the applications that are submitted, and recommend a slate of qualified candidates to the Board to be voted on by the membership at the Annual Meeting. A link to the Charter of the Nominating Committee is attached. The deadline to submit an application is Sunday, March 22nd.

If you are interested in being part of this important Committee, please contact me, Mike Kloehn, Nominating Committee Chair atm.kloehn@lwvmilwaukee.org or (904) 200-7815.

Medicaid Task Force Action Call

1.    Urge Your Members of Congress to Support Modernizing WIC: Ask your Members of Congress to join the growing list of cosponsors who support legislation that will allow permanent proven flexibilities to modernize and make the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) more accessible. Click here to use FRAC to send a message to your representative!

2.    Call your Senator to oppose Assembly Bill 1027: A separate bill would require Wisconsin to compile and turn over data to the federal government on all Wisconsin FoodShare recipients since 2020 in accordance with a July letter from the federal Department of Agriculture. The Trump administration says it is seeking the data so it can investigate fraud and has threatened to cut off SNAP benefits to states that don’t comply.

3.    Contact your State Senator today and ask them to support Sections 9 and 10 of Assembly Substitute Amendment 2 to Assembly Bill 180: On February 20, the Wisconsin State Assembly approved Assembly Bill 180 with Assembly Substitute Amendment 2, which includes important funding to help the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) continue administering the FoodShare program. Sections 9 and 10 of the amendment approved by the State Assembly help ensure DHS has the staff and resources needed to administer the program effectively and prevent significant penalties for the state.

ELECTION VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Looking for ways to help with Voter Registration for the April 7th election? The DMV is the place to be!

Every day there are opportunities to help people register to vote at the Milwaukee area department of motor vehicles offices.  The DMV is a great place to meet potential voters, new residents and new drivers. By combining Jim’s experience with our League's great Voter Services volunteer program we will be able to reach even more voters.  Volunteer now because online registration will close on March 18th.

Celebrating Pride and Community at Drag Queen Bingo

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Drag Queen Bingo at POP last Thursday! As the first event hosted by the LGBTQ+ Committee, it was an incredible success. The event sold out quickly and even had a waiting list, ensuring the room was filled with community members eager to connect, have fun, and learn more about the work and impact of the League of Women Voters.

Events like Drag Queen Bingo remind us that building community and celebrating LGBTQ+ culture go hand in hand with protecting civic rights. By creating welcoming spaces and staying informed about policies that may impact voter access, we strengthen our collective commitment to ensuring that every voice can be heard and every vote can count.

High Court Deals Blow to LGBTQ+ Student Protections

A recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court has dealt a significant setback to school policies designed to protect the privacy of LGBTQ+ students. The Court temporarily blocked a California rule that limited when educators could disclose a student’s gender identity to parents without the student’s consent. In a 6–3 ruling, the justices sided with parents who argued the policy violated their constitutional rights and parental authority over their children’s upbringing.

Supporters of student privacy policies argue that these rules exist to prevent potential harm, particularly for young people who fear rejection or retaliation from family members. By allowing schools to notify parents while the case proceeds in lower courts, the ruling could create uncertainty for districts trying to support vulnerable students.

The dispute reflects a broader national debate over how schools should balance parental involvement with the safety and autonomy of LGBTQ+ youth. Advocates warn that limiting confidentiality protections may discourage students from seeking support from trusted educators. As the legal challenge continues, the outcome could shape the future of policies affecting LGBTQ+ students in K-12 schools across the United States.

The League’s Unite & Rise 8.5 nonviolent, pro-democracy campaign believes religious leaders have significant authority to either support or push back against governments as has been shown in countries around the world such as Poland and the Philippines in the 1980s, as well as countries in Central America and Africa.  The Interfaith Conference of Milwaukee is sponsoring a series of 5 Tuesday lectures in March that addresses the call to “Raise our Moral Voice” here in Milwaukee.  You can attend one or all of the lectures, in person or online and register at Interfaith Conference.

to obey the law and release the Epstein files.

No need to bring a sign, you will be holding large letters on the bridge overpass. Our message will be "THE FILES ARE NOT IN IRAN". You can sign up for one or more one-hour shifts.  After you sign up you will receive parking information and other instructions. Sign up HERE.

Yes!  Protest Rallies are Happening During the Winter

Why do protests matter?

Visible resistance is essential so the government and its supporters  see the number of citizens who don’t agree with their actions.  Nonviolent visible protest activity encourages those sitting on the sidelines to join in.

Here is the link to the listing of ongoing weekly protests:  Protest Rallies
