View Abortion Facts Forum Recording

The Nov. 13 public issues forum "Fact or Fiction: Dispelling Abortion Care Myths" lived up to its billing. The presenters provided clarity on abortion-related topics that are subject to disinformation, such as anti-abortion billboards falsely depicting stages of fetal development. View the recording here -- and please share the link with others!

The forum was organized by the LWVMC Reproductive Rights committee: co-chairs Charlie Gaebler-Uhing and Betsey Caron; and members Nikita Werner; Gail Sklodowska; Kathy Randall; Pat McFarland; Lorna Grade; Peggy Creer; with much assistance from LWVMC administrative support coordinator Emily Tayler.

HONORING ELECTION INSPECTORS

Director of the Milwaukee Election Commission, Claire Woodall Vogg invited the League to honor all Chief Inspectors who have managed a polling place in over 30 elections. To give you context, that means at a minimum each inspector honored served at least a decade as Chief!

The League was co-sponsor for the event for the Chiefs, who are often some of the biggest advocates in the community to dispel election myths and to help their friends and neighbors navigate the voting process.

This event took place on Friday night November 10th in the Rotunda of the City Hall. We joined in fellowship and to celebrate their invaluable civic duty with the Election Commission and Mayor. Photos below.

Forty Chief Inspectors and their families gathered at City Hall to celebrate their service to the Milwaukee Election Commission.
Each honoree has at least one decade of service; one had 40 years of service!

Job Opening at LWVMC

I am so very sad to announce that Emily Porter Tayler, our valued Administrative Support Coordinator, has tendered her resignation. Her can-do, accommodating spirit will be sorely missed. She is taking a job in prenatal wellness, which is where her passion lies. While we wish Emily the best, this presents a job opening for us to fill as soon as possible. So if you know someone who is looking for a part time job, please contact me at n.maloney@lwvmilwaukee.orgFor a job description see below:

We are called to defend democracy…..

Merriam-Webster defines democracy as government by the people.  We participate by voting for elected officials.  Why don’t more people vote?  Reasons from an NPR (National Public Radio) survey after the 2020 general election include not being registered, feeling their vote wouldn’t have made a difference and being undecided on whom to vote for.

We educate voters about the candidates running for office with Vote411.org. We ask candidates where they stand on issues facing your community.

You can help by

  •  Identifying issues in your community and sharing them with the Vote411 Team at voterguide@lwvmilwaukee.org.
  •  Spreading the word about Vote411.org. It is very underutilized!  Watch these weekly Updates for ideas about other ways you can help!

This is what you have been waiting for…..  A short-term and short-time volunteer opportunity that you can do from home! The task involves calling LWVMC members as a follow-up to the annual donation appeal letter sent to members from the president.

We are looking at a three- to eight-hour time commitment over the two-week period from November 27 until December 8.  It is a telephone campaign that you can do from home.  We’ll have everything you need from a call list, directions including a script, and a Q&A.

Did you know that Black Friday is the name given to one day in London in 1910 when a group of 300 women marched to the Houses of Parliament as part of their campaign to secure voting rights for women? The devastating day earned its name from the violence meted out to protestors by the Metropolitan Police and male bystanders. LEARN MORE
