Join the Coffee for Our Cause Sales Team!

Coffee for Our Cause, our League’s major fundraiser, has a new look and needs dedicated League members to join the sales team.

We have a goal of recruiting 45 LWVMC members to sell coffee. We have 24 volunteers and need 21 more.

With the new look, should it have a new name?  What is “Our Cause?”  Maybe this should be a fundraiser “Coffee for Democracy.” Have an idea? Send it to Mary Voelker at m.voelker@lwvmilwaukee.org.

Our new vendor is East View Coffee Company, founded and owned by Jenny Ulbricht. The ordering and payment will be entirely online.  Coffee orders for three or more bags (12 oz.) will ship for free to a single address in mainland USA.

Sales team members are asked to sell/buy at least 9 bags of coffee.  The sales team will be invited to a coffee tasting event in August hosted by Jenny. The agenda will include training.

LWVUS Protest Safety Guidance

If you plan to participate in a political rally or protest march, know your rights and how to stay safe. If you decide to pull out your cell phone to record events, keep in mind that you have a 1st Amendment right to record law enforcement in public spaces, but only as long as you don't interfere -- and the police make that call.

Circuit Court Ruling Protects Access to Absentee Voting

On July 29, the Defendants, including League of Women Voters of Wisconsin and Disability Rights Wisconsin, won the Oldenburg v. Wisconsin Elections Commission case in circuit court. They were represented by Law Forward. The Law Forward announcement stated that the case "sought to derail this secure, practical, and effective system by creating unneeded, burdensome, and unwarranted new requirements for those voters and others."

Thomas Oldenburg challenged the Wisconsin Elections Commission on the handling of absentee ballots requested via the MyVote website. He claimed these ballots need a duplicate request with the voter's original signature and sought to invalidate newly approved absentee ballot envelopes, alleging they violate state election laws and could lead to voter fraud.  Commenting on the ruling, Debra Cronmiller, LWVWI Executive Director, said, “Voters should feel confident in turning their absentee ballot."  Read the full news release here.

Disability Voting Rights Week: Sept. 9-13

Mark your calendar: Disability Voting Rights Week is a crucial initiative focused on building power within the disability community by ensuring people with disabilities are registered and ready to vote. People with disabilities are a significant voting bloc, and are a part of all political parties and demographics. Systemic barriers and voter suppression continue to prevent many disabled voters from accessing the ballot, and DVRW is also about continuing to fight to improve election accessibility and raise the visibility of our community as an important voting bloc. To volunteer for an event and learn more about empowering the disability vote, visit here.
