FUTURE VOTERS!

The 2024 Future Voters event was held 9/25/24 with many families participating. Along with providing voter registration and information about voting, we gave away school supplies to children and engaged in fun games and activities for the entire family. Of equal importance was the collaboration with community partners who participated in the following ways:

  • Safe & Sound offered a ballot box exercise;

  • VoteRiders had a large poster board and asked all participants to write on the board why it's important to vote;

  • Muskego Way Forward offered an interactive quiz regarding local government;

  • Wisconsin Interfaith Voter Education Campaign hosted a selfie station;

  • LWVMC/Comité organized the paper bags art project and a spin wheel with various questions;

  • Cristo Rey had a spin-the-wheel civics trivia assisted by two student ambassadors.

Kudos to Eloisa Gomez, Diane Steigerwald, Maria Avila and Maddie Mason for organizing and coordinating this event! They keep us focused on the importance of introducing young people to the idea of democracy.

City of Milwaukee Drop Boxes

November 5, 2024 General Election Drop Box Schedule

Drop boxes will be operational by 10:30am on Monday, October 14, 2024 through Election Day, Tuesday November 5, 2024 until 6:00pm.

Drop Box Information Center

On July 5, 2024, the Wisconsin Supreme Court overruled its prior decision, in part, in

Teigen v. WEC and held that secure drop boxes were permitted under state law as a valid method of mail ballot return. As a result, the City of Milwaukee Election Commission is reactivating its mail ballot drop box program.

A ballot drop box provides a secure and convenient means for voters to return their mail ballot.

The City of Milwaukee utilizes secure specialized heavy-duty steel ballot drop boxes that are permanently anchored in place. Specially trained election officials operate the drop boxes to ensure they are properly secured, emptied, and locked. All ballot drop boxes in the City of Milwaukee are under 24-hour surveillance. Voters are typically able to deliver their mail ballots 24 hours a day to any drop box in the city from the time they receive them in the mail, up to a predetermined time before polls close on Election Day. Details about specific start times and final retrievals can be found posted on the drop box or on the Milwaukee Election Commission’s website.

Many municipalities have decided not to allow drop boxes, so if you are not in the City of Milwaukee, call your Municipal Clerk to find out the schedule and location of drop boxes, if any, in your municipality. To find your clerk go to Find My Clerk

November 2024 Constitutional Amendment

This November, voters will have another harmful, divisive constitutional amendment on our ballots. We will show up and vote NO and keep Wisconsin moving forward.

Our voting rights are literally on the ballot with this amendment. The change from "every" to "only" is a language change that can alter our constitutionally protected voting rights from a guarantee for all citizens to a limitation that could be used to erode our voting rights. Lawmakers have already discussed implementing a proof of citizenship requirement despite knowing that 1 in 10 US Citizens don't have documentation to prove their citizenship.

From The Brennan Center: Convenience matters when it comes to consistent participation in American elections. Even if a citizen is certain that a passport or birth certificate is in a safety deposit box at the bank, voters are busy; an additional trip to the bank would surely prevent some voters from registering to vote if such documents were required. (We consider a document to be readily available if respondents “could quickly find it if [they] had to show it tomorrow.”)

The League is gearing up to stand with our partners and voters to take down this constitutional amendment. We won’t let the legislature erode our voting rights. Follow LWVWI on Facebook and read our biweekly updates to stay informed on future resources and programs.

Election Observer Training Oct. 24, 6-8 pm

The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin needs your help to monitor Wisconsin's elections. We are seeking volunteers to be trained as Election Observers and placed in polling places in specific areas around the state. Training is provided, and the program is open to non-members.

Election Observation Program Goals:

1.        to be sure there is no disenfranchisement

2.        to monitor the voter experience - including registration and showing ID

3.        to monitor the absentee ballot counting process

4.        to track any problems that can be fixed for future elections

Requirements: You'll need to be available to volunteer for a minimum of 2 hours on Election Day. Election observers will also need a cell phone to use while volunteering and have their own transportation to and from their assigned polling location. There are also opportunities to be a "roving" observer and observe at multiple polling sites. Rovers need to be available to volunteer for at least 4 hours on Election Day.

Training Information: We conduct our election observer training via online webinar.
