Donor Advised Fund Day.  (DAF Day)

Today, October 10, 2024 is the very first “Donor-Advised Fund Day”

We take this opportunity to say thank you to our members who contribute to the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County with gifts from their Donor Advised Funds. Being a 501(c)(3) public charity qualifies LWVMC to receive support from Donor Advised Funds.

The donor-advised fund (DAF) is becoming an increasingly popular way to make a charitable gift. If you have a Donor Advised Fund, please consider the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County when making decisions on your charitable giving. Note: LWVMC has its own EIN, 39-6096750 -- separate from the state and national LWVs.

Does the concept of a donor-advised fund (DAF) appeal to you? If you don’t have a DAF, you may want to talk with your financial advisor about whether it would be a fit with your financial and charitable giving goals. Brokerage firms and the Greater Milwaukee Foundation (GMF) offer options for donor-advised funds.

City of Milwaukee Drop Boxes

November 5, 2024 General Election Drop Box Schedule

Drop boxes will be operational by 10:30am on Monday, October 14, 2024 through Election Day, Tuesday, November 5, 2024 until 6:00pm.

Drop Box Information Center

On July 5, 2024, the Wisconsin Supreme Court overruled its prior decision, in part, in Teigen v. WEC and held that secure drop boxes were permitted under state law as a valid method of mail ballot return. As a result, the City of Milwaukee Election Commission is reactivating its mail ballot drop box program.

A ballot drop box provides a secure and convenient means for voters to return their mail ballot.

The City of Milwaukee utilizes secure specialized heavy-duty steel ballot drop boxes that are permanently anchored in place. Specially trained election officials operate the drop boxes to ensure they are properly secured, emptied, and locked. All ballot drop boxes in the City of Milwaukee are under 24-hour surveillance. Voters are typically able to deliver their mail ballots 24 hours a day to any drop box in the city from the time they receive them in the mail, up to a predetermined time before polls close on Election Day. Details about specific start times and final retrievals can be found posted on the drop box or on the Milwaukee Election Commission’s website.

Many municipalities have decided not to allow drop boxes, so if you are not in the City of Milwaukee, call your Municipal Clerk to find out the schedule and location of drop boxes, if any, in your municipality. To find your clerk go to Find My Clerk

Recording available of "Dire Consequences: Impact of Abortion Restrictions"

LWVMC Reproductive Rights committee presented a public issues forum on Oct. 2, titled, "Dire Consequences: Impact of Abortion Restrictions, a Focus on Wisconsin.” The event,  held at No Studios as well as live streamed, was moderated by committee co-chair Charlie Gaebler-Uhing. You can watch the recording on our website here.

Main presenter Kathy Hartke, M.D. Obstetrician/Gynecologist, talked about life in the U.S. before Roe ensured abortion rights. She noted that in the early 1970s, women were dying from botched abortions in what were called septic abortion wards in hospitals across the country. She described the situations in many U.S. states following the SCOTUS Dobbs decision, where state legislatures have passed laws restricting access to reproductive health care. Dr. Hartke cited a study that showed more than 90% of ob-gyn doctors surveyed said they are suffering moral distress caused by restrictive laws that have prevented them or their colleagues from providing standard medical care.

In WI, since a court's ruling on September 18, 2023, the right to abortion was restored for up to 22 weeks gestation. She described the many factors that make every pregnancy unique, so that legislation cannot be written adequately to cover all circumstances. In 2020, 900 women in the U.S. died of pregnancy complications, a 30% increase since 2018 (before the Dobbs decision). Please watch and share the valuable information shared in the forum.

November 2024 Constitutional Amendment

This November, voters will have another harmful, divisive constitutional amendment on our ballots. We will show up and vote NO and keep Wisconsin moving forward.

Our voting rights are literally on the ballot with this amendment. The change from "every" to "only" is a language change that can alter our constitutionally protected voting rights from a guarantee for all citizens to a limitation that could be used to erode our voting rights. Lawmakers have already discussed implementing a proof of citizenship requirement despite knowing that 1 in 10 US Citizens don't have documentation to prove their citizenship.

From The Brennan Center: Convenience matters when it comes to consistent participation in American elections. Even if a citizen is certain that a passport or birth certificate is in a safety deposit box at the bank, voters are busy; an additional trip to the bank would surely prevent some voters from registering to vote if such documents were required. (We consider a document to be readily available if respondents “could quickly find it if [they] had to show it tomorrow.”)

The League is gearing up to stand with our partners and voters to take down this constitutional amendment. We won’t let the legislature erode our voting rights. Follow LWVWI on Facebook and read our biweekly updates to stay informed on future resources and programs.

Election Observer Training Oct. 24, 6-8 pm

The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin needs your help to monitor Wisconsin's elections. We are seeking volunteers to be trained as Election Observers and placed in polling places in specific areas around the state. Training is provided, and the program is open to non-members.

Election Observation Program Goals:

1.        to be sure there is no disenfranchisement

3.        to monitor the absentee ballot counting process

4.        to track any problems that can be fixed for future elections

Requirements: You'll need to be available to volunteer for a minimum of 2 hours on Election Day. Election observers will also need a cell phone to use while volunteering and have their own transportation to and from their assigned polling location. There are also opportunities to be a "roving" observer and observe at multiple polling sites. Rovers need to be available to volunteer for at least 4 hours on Election Day.
